Do you want to get rid of cold drafts, moisture or mold, improve temperature control, and reduce your electric bills? Or do you have problems with ice dams and other structural concerns? Are you concerned that your home may be contributing to allergies, asthma, or heat related health issues? Are you interested in insulating against noise?

A Mass Save Home Energy Assessment can help with all those concerns. It's‌ ‌no-cost and comes with all sorts of savings!‌ ‌A Mass Save Home Energy Assessment is the first step towards reducing your carbon footprint. It will provide you with a good idea of the current energy efficiency of your home and help guide you in deciding on actions you can take.

If you have not had your home assessed in the last two years, you can have it done again. It may be time to improve your insulation, or check out technologies like smart thermostats, and the incentives for retrofits may have changed as well! If you decide to go forward with the recommendations, keep in mind that rebates from the Mass Save program can provide up to 75% of the cost of insulation upgrades with no cap on costs. This can lead to a much more comfortable home and much lower heating and cooling bills. Mass Save will also pay 100% of the cost of basic common air sealing measures. It may also provide you with no-cost LED light bulbs, efficient showerheads, and power strips (sent to your home) if those are right for you. Mass Save also provides a 0% loan program for financing HVAC and energy efficiency measures.

If you live in a condo, you can still get an assessment! The organization who assigns condo assessments is the utility Multifamily Market Integrators. Check them out here.

  1. Sign up for a no-cost home energy assessment or call 1-866-527-SAVE (7283) to schedule your IN-PERSON or VIRTUAL Home Energy Assessment with a Mass Save Energy Specialist. Have your electric and natural gas bill account number ready.
  2. During the home energy assessment, you will likely be asked to show the heating and cooling systems, the attic, exterior walls and basement to determine if any areas need insulation, lights and thermostats.
  3. At the end of the home energy assessment, you will receive recommended actions for property improvements.
  4. You will then schedule a tentative date for any recommended insulation and air sealing. These in-home improvements will only be completed upon your approval and once the state, the Mass Save program, and the vendor are confident that they can do the work safely.
  5. Receive recommended no-cost energy saving products that will instantly save you money (including LED light bulbs, smart thermostats and smart powerstrips), shipped directly to your door for you to install.
  6.  Access generous Mass Save rebates and incentives to make recommended long-term energy-saving upgrades to your home.
  7. Tell us about it! Leave a Testimonial in the tab above!

How does this virtual assessment work? The Virtual Assessment will be conducted over the phone for up to an hour. Prior to the call (or during if necessary) you will need to take photos of areas of your home that could be eligible for energy-efficient upgrades. If you cannot take the photos ahead of time, there will be other options at the time of the assessment. If opportunities are found to weatherize or insulate your home at no cost, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled with an installation specialist.

Why is it no-cost to me? As a National Grid customer, you have already been paying into this program through your utility bill, so it’s worthwhile to take advantage of it. Thanks to the Green Communities Act of 2008, Massachusetts utilities and energy efficiency service providers that sponsor Mass Save are required by the state to provide energy efficiency programs.

What does a home energy assessment entail? A customized energy report tailored specifically to your home.

Who is going to do the audit and the work? There are two ways to use the Mass Save Home Energy Audit system:

1 - A Mass Save approved Home Performance Contractor can do the audit and the weatherization and insulation. This is a convenient and safe option most people use. Choose your Home Performance Contractor here.

2 - If you want to choose a particular contractor for insulation and/or air sealing upgrades, have a Mass Save Home Energy Specialist perform your audit and choose an approved Independent Installation Contractor from the local list. See the Independent Installation Contractors that are available in your area here. For heat pump installations, you can contact a Heat Pump Installer Network Contractor.

I had one of these a while ago? Can I have one again? If you have not had your home assessed in the last two years, you can have it done again. It may be time to improve your insulation, or check out technologies like smart thermostats, and the incentives for retrofits may have changed as well.

What if I have an older or historic home? What options are there for me?

You can still get a Mass Save Home Energy Audit. However, if you have an older or historic home, there may be additional considerations when it comes to retrofits or energy upgrades. The Town of Concord, in collaboration with the University of New Hampshire’s Sustainability Institute Fellowship program, has put out a guide for retrofitting historic homes which you may find helpful. It can be accessed here.

What are decarbonization consultations?

Decarbonization consultations offered by Mass Save are designed to help provide home owners with technical guidance and support around upgrading their heating systems and issues like weatherization. They also offer advice on how to effectively engage contractors for these types of upgrades.
